J'adore Paris!

January 27 and January 28

Took off from ATL. Mom drove. It was hard to leave her. After nearly a year and a half after applying for the Fulbright and after spending a great deal of time planning since late December, however, I was ready to get this show on the road. We took off from Paris at 6:10 on an Air France flight to Paris. I was thrilled that our itinerary included a 23 hour and 45 minute layover in Paris, one of my favorite cities on this planet. I also love flying Air France…from the champagne and the good food and the very pleasant flight attendants, I love it all and try to fly Air France whenever there is an opportunity.

On the plane I met a very nice woman named Pat from Arkansas who was also going to Ukraine to support churches that are developing around the region. This wasn’t her first trip to Ukraine, and when she asked about what I was doing, she responded, “I’ve been to Chernivtsi!” She offered to help put me in touch with some of the people she met and keeps in touch with. One thing I will miss about the US will be my Bible study group and the special women that comprise it. So, I asked about any English language Bible study groups and she told me there was one that meets in this coffee shop in town! Couldn’t believe it.

We landed in Paris at 8:30 and took the RER (train and metro) to Place St Michel. From there I walked to the Hotel College du France. It is a cute little hotel with a great breakfast that will last you pretty much the whole day. It is close to the Sorbonne and is centrally located in the Quartier Latin. I spent that afternoon and early evening hitting the highlights of my favorite places in Paris: St. Etienne du Mont (my favorite church in Paris), St Severin, crossing le Seine onto the Ile de la Cite in front of Notre Dame, Hotel de Ville (where there is a ice skating rink in the winter), the carousel near the Hotel de Ville, and the ruins at Arenes de Lutece. I walked past the Pantheon, found the spot where Henri IV was assassinated, and took a path that took me past the Coligny statue near the Louvre. I walked the Champs-Elysees, passing the Eiffel Tower on the left. I ended at the Arc de Triomphe and took the metro back to the Quartier Latin, just in time to make the dinner reservation at my favorite restaurant in Paris, le Coupe Chou.

Every time I go to Paris, I love it more. There are few cities that are more beautiful and more captivating. Paris just has a certain finesse. Now, on to Kyiv!!
